Memoir Series by Marni Mann

Memoir Series by Marni Mann

Marni Mann has become one of my favorite authors to date. Any time she releases a new book I immediately download it on my kindle.  I even became friends with her on Facebook because I why not. She seems like a fun, down to earth person to follow. I usually try to keep authors on the same pedestal because there have been cases where I would fall in love with a book series and then the follow up books would be a huge disappointment. There have also been cases where I would become attached to an author and all of sudden they would not release anymore books. So I made the decision to not have a favorite author or book series so I could spare myself the disappointment.

But then I was introduced to Marni Mann. I was updating my GoodReads page when one of her books caught my eye. It was called Memoirs Aren’t Fairytales: A Story of Addiction. There were nothing but five star ratings on this book and the reviews were majority positive. I decided to add the series to my To-Read list.  It took me about a week to finish this series and it probably would have been sooner if I could have devoted all of my time to it.

The series touches on heroin, addiction, darkness, rape, and finding hope and meaning after recovery. I do not think there is person out there who could not feel broken on the inside after reading these books. Even though I have never been an addict, I connected with the lead character Nicole on so many levels. Every single word struck a chord within me. Every character was unique, but real. You could feel the emotions that Nicole was going through. When I started this series, I knew it was about addiction because of the title obviously, but I was not prepared for what I was about to get into.

By the time I finished both books I was an emotional wreck. In a good way.  I not going to say these books are easy reads because they aren’t. It is a powerful and raw story of a girl struggling with addiction and it will have you deep in your feelings. The writing was beyond incredible. If you’re someone who does not know to much about addiction then this series is a great one to read. I honestly felt like I was walking in Nicole’s shoes while she was going through everything.  It has been two years since I first read this series and it still manages to creep into my thoughts from time to time. This series was one the main reasons I fell in love with dark fiction.

Although this story is fictional, Marni made sure to make readers understand that the struggle of addiction is very real. When I finished this series I had so many emotions running through me. This was the first book that ever made me cry. I have read many books, but none have ever brought me to tears.

I highly recommend anyone to read this series. Marni Mann wrote a vivid story of the horror of addiction and how it stays a part of an addict’s life. It will make you view the world that surrounds you in a different light.

If you ever read this Marni, I want to say thank you. Thank you for helping me get rid of my bias and judgements and opening my eyes to an addict’s life. The last thing that they need is to be judged and ridiculed. They need support and love so they can defeat these demons.

If you ever have a chance, read these books. I promise you will not regret it.

Dirty Talk by Lauren Landish

Dirty Talk by Lauren Landish

This was my first book that I read by Lauren Landish and I was not disappointed.  I have heard many good things about Lauren so I decided to give her a try. After reading the synopsis, I knew I wanted to make this book apart of my GoodReads challenge.

First off, the book cover was super hot, so when I was going through which of her books I wanted to read first, this one stood out. I usually read my books on my iPad or Kindle, so if I am out in public reading, I know I won’t get any weird looks from people.

One of the things that I enjoyed about this book is the dialogue. Lauren made the characters more relatable with the dialogue between the characters which made it more enjoyable. We are introduced to  Katrina Snow who is a senior designer at her job where she specializes in creating apps for phones. She has trust issues due to a string of bad relationships and her father not being the best role model when she was growing up. Derrick, also known as The Love Whisperer, is a popular radio DJ who gives love advice on his popular satellite radio show.

The book begins with Katrina discovering that her boyfriend has been cheating on her, which then influences her to call Derrick’s radio show for some relationship advice. With only hearing each others voices, the romance between the two of them begin. Even though Katrina has serious doubts about the fairytale romance, Derrick manages to break down her walls to show her that there are loyal men out there.

Lauren does a great job at bringing all of the characters to life in this book. Dirty Talk is a short and quick read, but the Lauren does not disappoint.  The story has its funny moments along with its emotional moments. All in all I am glad that this was the first book that I decided to read from this author. I downloaded a few more of her books to my library so I’m hoping they are just as entertaining.

Strungballs by Mike Russell

Strungballs by Mike Russell

I had the opportunity to review a new book called Strungballs by Mike Russell. I would like to thank the author Mike Russell, and Jay, the secretary for Strangebooks for reaching out to me and offering an opportunity to review my first book for my blog.

What are Strungballs? That is question that everyone wants to know when they begin reading this book. The story starts out introducing Sydney who is about to have a medical procedure done to have a portion of his skin removed. After the procedure, he is given a ‘Strungball’ by his parents to show his bravery.  The ‘Strungball’ is nothing more that a red ball that is placed on a white string which is then placed in the hole where he had the skin removed with white string hanging down in front of his medical gown. The warning that he is given is “Once a Strungball is inserted, it must never be removed.”

The world that Sydney lives in is very robotic like. The citizens all seem to have standard routine that they live by and they are always focused on doing what is good. Russell also points out that numbers and time are very important to them as well. Popularity is based on the amount of ‘Strungballs’ a person has. The more, the better.

At first, Sydney is happy about his ‘Strungball.’ That is until he meets Albert, a much older gentleman who has many ‘Strungballs.’ Albert begins to mess with Sydney’s head and makes him question things about his life, which initially makes him remove the ‘Strungball’ from his chest? So, what happens to Sydney after he removes it?

This story was is definitely one of the strangest books that I have read, but it was interesting. It did draw me in as I was reading about the world Sydney lived in and after I found out what Strungballs were. When Sydney began his journey to find out the truth of the world, the story started to get a bit stranger, but in a good way.

If you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy stories, this novella is for you. It is quick read, but full of imagination and I honestly believe there is a good message that goes along with it. It is a story that will make you think after you finish it, but that is what makes it so intriguing.
